Sometimes I feel like I have Down syndrome.
You know how it is in the states – there are the people who feel comfortable when approached by a Down person and those who don’t.
When I approach Thai people with my broken Thai, most of them are happy enough to oblige my “slowness” and slow down their own lives for a while. They talk at a different pace and smile at your mistakes.
Then there are those Thais who see me coming and do their best to avoid the situation. Oh boy, they think, I can’t understand a damn word this guy says. This is always awkward. I’m getting out of here.
I’m developing new forms to empathy every day.
